This is a French film with Daniel Auteuil and Danny Boon. Auteuil plays an antiques dealer who appears to have lots of friends, and is always out on social engagements. At a meal to celebrate his birthday his “friends” tell him some home truths, and his business partner challenges him to introduce to everyone his best friend in  the next 10 days. Turns out he struggles to come up with a best friend. That is until he meets a taxi driver played by Boon.

A great film with some funny and sad moments.

Wild Target (***)

This is a comedy with Bill Nighy playing a ageing assassin who takes a shine to a woman he contracted to kill. The film film plot twists and turns and you never know where it is going, but you always realise it is the obvious way to go. Some funny repartee, but the film somehow does not completely hang together.

Frozen River (***)

A film about an unlikely,  desperate and uneasy alliance between two women (one white one native indian) on the US and Canadian border. They have both fallen on hard times and have issues. They end up smuggling illegal immigrants across the border to make money.

The film is not the happiest film I have seen but I understand why it got the awards it did Sundance festival winner and academy award nomination for best actress.

Robin Hood (***)

Another film about Robin Hood, but it takes a bit a of different view of history. Russel Crowe is Robin and does a good job. The film was quite long but I did not find myself looking at my watch. Some great battle scenes and plenty of suspense to keep you on the edge of your seats.

Cassandra’s Dream ***

Two London brothers are hard-up for cash, and both have girls to keep happy. When rich Uncle Howard comes to town and makes them a devilish offer, he says that they’re family, and since he always takes care of them, the least they could do is help him out this once, as they’re the only ones he can trust. The film follows their struggle with the immorality of this request and how each brother chooses to deal with it.
Excellent cast, good film, a bit weak in parts.

Somers Town (****)

Marek  a polish immigrant, living with his father, and Tomo (run away from home in Nottingham) strike  an unlikely friendship, in Somers Town north London. They spend their day around the local neighbourhood, and take a fancy to a French waitress in a local Cafe. There is a local “Dell Boy” who they help out to earn money.

The film is brilliantly filmed in black and white, has a great sound track and both sad and funny moments, all you could want from a film really.

Son of Rambow (****)

SON OF RAMBOW is the name of the home movie made by two little boys with a big video camera and even bigger ambitions. Set on a long English summer in the early 80’s, SON OF RAMBOW is a comedy about friendship, faith and the tough business of growing up.  Filmed around Berkhamsted so some familiar places, including the Rex.  A good film.

Coco before Channel (****)

It seems I always give films 4 stars, I guess it is because I try to pick good films to watch and this one is no different.

It is played by the actor from Amelie and is about the early years of Coco Channel. It starts with her being abandoned at  an orphange with her sister. Then moves on as the two of them work in a bar and attempt to work there way into society by dating the gentlemen who frequent the bar. Coco gets befriended by a rich aristocrat who at first tries to keep her a secret but eventually turns out to have a big heart and just want to look after her. An English wide boy who is trying to marry into money steals her heart and then gets a bit messy, but eventually Coco end up making clothes for the rich and end up fulfilling her ambitions.

The Damned United (****)

This is a film about the famous Brain Clough and his rivalry with Reevie who takes over from Alf Ramsey as England manager when Alf is sacked. Reevie upsets Clough during a FA cup round match when Reevie snubs Clough. I am not sure if it was intentional or not, but Clough never forget and spends a few years working his way up the leagues with two teams (including Reevies old team), and trying to out do Reevie both on and off the pitch.

The film is set in the late 60’s early 70’s and the attention to detail is superb.
