Got up for breakfast at 9, excellent fry the landlord had got up early to get us some Quorn sausages, we had mentioned the previous evening we are all veggies. Drove to Minsmere RSPB reserve then walked over to Dunwich Heath via the north wall. Saw a suspected Osprey that turned out to be a Marsh Harrier, but no Dartford Warbler. After coffee at the coast guard cottages we headed back down to the East hide where there was not much to see the usual ducks, lots of Lapwings, and just a couple of waders (Dunlin). On the way back to the visitors centre we got superb views of 5 Bearded Tits. Back to the pub to change then off to Southwold shopping. We saw a field of Curlew on the way. Bought some almonds and a Heidi Pie from the foodies shop then back to our accommodation to watch the rugby. Ireland won and as I write I we are in the pub drinking best bitter!

Yet more snow

the-oak

Woke up to more snow today. Walked to work via Buckland. Not many people at work and they shut the place down at one. Walked home then got on with some work. The picture is The Oak pub in Aston Clinton taken on the way to work.

Snow again

buckland-in-the-snow

The worst since 1991 according to the BBC. A41 is partially covered and we are expecting more later on. I decided to walk to work it took about 45 minutes I went the back way down through Buckland. Might try it again it again, a nice way to start the day. Saw three Bullfinches.

Garden Bird Watch

grand-union-wendover-arm

Up the road to do Garden Bird Watch 2009. Started a bit late 16:20, but will make the most of the light available as Angela was throwing a ball for the dog so not much around to start. Rook, Wood Pigeon, Blackbird (3). That is the lot even walking round the garden did no good. The usual Tits etc were not about.

Penn Street

penn-street-church

Went for a walk round Penn Wood and Penn House. House looks like it has a lot of history there is a large carved wooden gate, and there was a statue of a woman with a dog in the large garden. Plenty of evidence of a large gardens was the Rhododendrons that have invaded the woods. Saw two buzzards one seemed to be chasing a kestrel high into the sky. Penn Wood where we ended the walk is supposed to be a large brambling roost. We hardly saw a dicky bird!

The Lee again

Quick walk after a game of squash this morning. Not many birds about except in a garden in Ballinger. Picture is one of the two churches in The Lee.

The Old Swan, Swan Bottom

the-old-swan

Walked starting and ending at the Old Swan. Yellowhammer then saw a large flock Redwing and Fieldfare feeding in a field. They were spooked by a Sparrowhawk. Later saw a couple of Crows. As we got close to The Lee, saw 20ish Meadow Pipit in a field with horse and possible a couple of Mistle Thrush. Ended the walk with a pint of Weary Banker (The Marlow Brewery), and a Veggie burger and chips, mine Mexican style. Beer was excellent nice light real ale. Burgers were great. (4 YTD 55)

A winters walk

Frosted trees

Went for a walk with Helen up around St Leonards and The Lee. Saw a mixed flock with Yellowhammer, Bullfinch and a Common Buzzard. It was very cold, but well worth the effort to see the winter spectacle. There were no muddy paths just uneven ground because the mud was like concrete.

PS Saw a Green Woodpecker from the window at work on Friday (4 YTD 51).

Some more birds

Walk with Helens folks, along canal then up into the woods:

Song Thrush, Coal Tit, Wren, Moorhen, Mallard, Little Grebe, Goldcrest, Red-legged Partridge, Pheasant, Robin (10 YTD 21)
