Tenderness (***)

A Russel Crowe film, with an original script. A guy that killed his parents, is stalked by a girl who is abused, and they are both pursued by an almost retired policeman who thinks that the guy will kill again. The policmans also has a wife who is dying of some wasting disease.

If all that sounds cheerful this is the film for you. Some great shots, an original story line, and a good score.

Defiance (****)

Set in the forests of Belarus, during the German occupation. Jews are being rounded up and and transported to camps or killed.Three brothers end up living in the forest, and slowly more and more escapee Jews join them and they become a defiant community. One of the brothers joins the russians malitia and their two stories run in parallel throughout the film.
Based on true events the film gets the 4th star for being such a good story.

Tamara Drewe (***)

The trailer suggested a British comedy, about an attractuve girl returning to a rural village she once lived in and had had connections with existing people currently living there.
The people living there a couple who run a writers retreat od the witers within, a local odd job man, and a couple of teenage girls who hang out at the bus stop.
The film is your typical british comedy with all the cliches you would expect. I found it funny. It is not up there with the comedy classics, but well worth watching.

The Men Who Stared at Goats (***)

Film poster the men who stared at goats

the title of the film and the A list actors suggested this film could be fantastic. Sadly it did live up to my expectatiions. Having said that it was an original story.
Basically Ewan McGregor is a journalist who ends up in the middle east war zone, after his marriage breaks up. He meets up with someone who he had heard of whilst doing a story for his local paper years before.
This leads him to enter the war zone and find out about a secret section of the us army who use mind power to beat then enemy, and the experiments done where goats were killed by being stared at!
It has it’s moments but I would not recommend to the average film goer they might be disappointed.

Angelina Jolie stars in the film where she plays a CIA agent who interogates a former cold war Russian agent. He tells her that she is a conditioned Russion spy from the 197o’s, and that she is going to kill the visiting Russian president, at the funeral of the american vice-president. Things then get very action thriller from then on.

Great action scenes and car chashes galore. Helen gave it 4 stars but I am more conservative so only 3.

I Love You Phillip Morris (***)

Film poster I love you Phillip Morris

Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor star in the this film about a guy who is happily married, working for the police, and an upstanding member of the christian community. Living the american dream so to speak. Then things take a complete turn about he finds out that he was adopted and then has a car accident. Suddenly he is gay and commiting fraud to fund his lavish habits.

He then gets cuaght and goe to prison where he meets Ewan McGregor and falls in love. The film then continues with him in and out of jail and going to extreme  lengths to be with the person he loves.

When I see Jim carrey in a film I can’t help thinking that it is all a bit tongue in cheek, and to some extent the film is, but it does not distract from what is claimed to be based on the true life events of Steven Jay Russell. Altough there are some seriuos parts to the film the exploits of Mr Russell are so extreme it almost becomes comical.

Well worth a watch.

The Infidel (***)

This is a film about a muslim father (Mahmud) who is a “relaxed” muslim, his son want to marry the daughter of an devout muslim cleric, and want to visit the family to check how muslim the family really are.

The story takes a twist when Mahmud when clearing out his deceased mothers house finds an adoption certificate. After some investigation he finds out that he is the birth child of a Jew, who it turns out is still alive.

He then needs to learn about Judism in order to get past the Rabbi who is guarding the birth fathers room. With the help of an american jewish taxi who he had previously had an altercation with Mahmud.

The film is full of funny moments and the commedian Omid Dijalili, makes the funny moments all the better. Well worth a watch even though only 3 stars.

Up in the air (****)

Up In The Air film poster

George Clooney comedy, about and executive who job it is to go into companies and fire people. He takes pride in his job, and does a lot of air miles. He has his routine down to a tee he one would say a seasoned traveller. He is also very close to becoming only the 7th person in history to achieve 20,000,000 miles, for which you get a platinum card.

A you up and coming employee then upsets the apple cart and proposes to sack people by video link, something which George does not agree with. He gets the job of raining up the new girl and is tasked with taking her on a trip.

There is also an affair going on between Geoprge and another lady whom he meets very occasionally when they happen to be over nighting in the same place.

An original scripts well acted with some very funny moments. I would recommend seeing it.

Toy Story 3 (*****)

Toy Story 3 film poster

As ever the toy story franchise has lived up to my expectations. All the usual characters plus a few more to keep the interest. At the beginning of the film I have fleeting thoughts that maybe they had run out of ideas, and we were going to see the same formula again but true to form the film makers had loads of new material.

My favorite bit was Buzz’s spanish mode. The quality of the images was amazing I suspect we were watching in very high resolution, as some of the adverts appeared to be much clearer than others. The animation was spectacular it took it to a new level, there was a scene in a garbage processing plant where there was literally 10’s of thousand of “bits” having to be rendered.

This film deserves full marks.

Inception (**)

This film promised a lot from the trailer. Lots of action, great special effect and a novel story line. In reality the film is very confusing, with too many sub-plots within sub plots. You could almost call it a recursive film.

Having said that there were a few great scenes in particular one where DeCaprio and the girl are sat outside a cafe and things were exploding around them.

I five one star the the film and an additional star because of the special effects.
